The GRE is no longer the alternative
The GRE is now a mainstream business-school test. Harvard says 44% of its MBA Class of 2027 submitted the GRE; a June 2025 analysis found 17 of 54 ranked U.S. MBA programs received more GRE than GMAT submissions; and ETS lists more than 1,300 business schools that welcome GRE scores for some or all MBA programs. The right applicant question is no longer “Will schools accept it?” but “Which test gives me the strongest academic signal?”
GRE at HBS
Share of the Class of 2027 that submitted a GRE score. Multiple-test submissions mean the percentages overlap.
GRE passed GMAT
Programs with more GRE than GMAT submissions in the 2023–24 cycle, according to a P&Q analysis of U.S. News data.
GRE acceptance
Business schools that ETS says welcome GRE scores for some or all MBA programs. Acceptance is not the same as usage.
Four headline claims, audited
The shift is real, but the qualifiers matter. Class years, reporting cycles and denominator rules can turn a useful statistic into a misleading one.
| Claim | Evidence verdict | What should be published |
|---|---|---|
| 44% of Harvard's MBA class submitted GRE | Verified. HBS reports 44% GRE for the Class of 2027. | Add that some students submitted multiple tests; 44% GRE does not mean the remaining 56% used only GMAT.1 |
| 17 of the top 50 use more GRE than GMAT | Essentially verified. The exact analysis says 17 of 54 ranked programs. | Use 17 of 54 in body copy. “Top 50” is the ranking label, not the exact denominator.2 |
| 1,300+ business schools accept GRE | Verified. ETS uses this language on its current MBA program list. | Call it an acceptance-policy statistic, not a measure of how many enrolled students chose GRE.3 |
| GRE is the majority test at Berkeley Haas | Cycle-specific. P&Q's U.S. News-based series reports 58% GRE in the 2023–24 cycle. | Attach the reporting cycle. Haas's current Class of 2027 profile publishes score levels but not the GRE/GMAT submission split.24 |
What the trend actually shows
GRE adoption is not a one-year anomaly. At Harvard, the reported GRE share moved from 34% for the Class of 2025 to 41% for the Class of 2026 and 44% for the Class of 2027.156 Across the ranked U.S. MBA comparison, the number of GRE-dominant programs rose from nine in 2022 to 17 of 54 in the 2023–24 cycle.2
This is best described as a shift in legitimacy and usage, not the death of the GMAT. The GMAT remains the purpose-built business-school exam, is used by a large share of MBA applicants and is still reported prominently by leading schools. But GRE submission is now too common at elite programs to be framed as a second-tier route.
Accepted is not preferred
A school can accept GRE while enrolling mostly GMAT submitters. Check both the admissions policy and the latest class profile.
Percentages may overlap
HBS allows multiple-test submissions. NYU Stern, by contrast, reports mutually exclusive test and waiver categories.
Every figure needs a cohort
“Now” becomes stale quickly. Attach the class year or admissions cycle whenever you quote a test share.
Why GRE adoption rose
- One test preserves more graduate-school options. The GRE can support applications across business, public policy, data science, engineering management and other graduate fields. That flexibility is valuable for dual-degree and still-exploring applicants.
- Leading schools made test neutrality explicit. HBS says it has no preference toward a particular test.1 Clear language from highly selective programs reduced the reputational risk applicants once associated with GRE.
- Pandemic-era access accelerated an existing transition. Remote testing and disrupted test-centre access changed candidate behaviour. The durable post-pandemic GRE shares suggest the market did not simply revert to the old pattern.
- The GMAT changed too. The redesigned exam was introduced as GMAT Focus and is now marketed as the GMAT Exam.8 Recent class profiles may therefore separate current GMAT, legacy or “10th edition” GMAT, GRE, Executive Assessment and waiver categories.
What admissions committees are evaluating
Admissions teams do not compare a GRE total directly with a GMAT total. The scales, sections and test-taking populations differ. They read the score alongside transcript strength, quantitative coursework, professional evidence and the demands of the curriculum.
| Admissions lens | Question behind the score | Applicant implication |
|---|---|---|
| Quant readiness | Can this student manage statistics, finance, economics and analytical coursework? | A strong GRE Quant score can be fully credible; the test label does not make weak Quant disappear. |
| Academic consistency | Does the result reinforce or repair the undergraduate record? | If the transcript is light on mathematics, the test needs to carry more evidentiary weight. |
| Profile context | Is the candidate changing field, applying to joint degrees or coming from a non-traditional background? | GRE flexibility can make strategic sense without signalling weaker commitment to business school. |
| Cohort reporting | How does the score support the school's class profile and reporting standards? | A result comfortably inside or above the published range is easier for a committee to defend. |
Scholarship caution: no primary school policy reviewed for this article stated that GRE applicants receive an automatic scholarship penalty. Merit-award practices vary and can change. Ask each program how academic merit is assessed rather than relying on forum anecdotes.
MBA versus MiM: the test choice means something different
| Decision lens | MBA applicant | MiM applicant |
|---|---|---|
| Profile context | Work experience can strengthen the academic and leadership story around the score. | With limited full-time experience, transcript and test evidence often carry more of the readiness case. |
| Published data | U.S. MBA class profiles often publish score levels and sometimes submission shares. | European and Asian MiM programs commonly publish acceptance rules or suggested scores, but rarely the GRE/GMAT split. |
| Option value | GRE can support joint-degree or cross-sector plans; GMAT is purpose-built for business school. | GRE may preserve options across specialised master's degrees while still serving MiM applications. |
| What to optimise | The strongest credible section profile for the target MBA portfolio. | Clear evidence of academic readiness for an analytically demanding pre-experience degree. |
London Business School illustrates the MiM evidence gap. Its current application page lists a GMAT, GMAT Focus or GRE score among required documents and says a strong score indicates the ability to succeed on the program, but it does not publish a test-submission split.7 That supports test parity at the policy level; it does not prove identical usage.
A practical GRE-or-GMAT decision framework
- Start with the exact program list. Record accepted tests, waiver rules, published score ranges and whether each school separates current and legacy GMAT data.
- Take a diagnostic in both formats. Compare section percentiles, not just headline totals. Pay particular attention to the quantitative and data demands of the target curriculum.
- Test the improvement curve. Spend a focused week learning each format. Choose after seeing where deliberate practice produces the larger gain, not simply where the cold diagnostic started.
- Stress-test the score against the academic story. A low Quant result is harder to carry when the transcript also lacks quantitative evidence. A strong GRE Quant can answer that concern.
- Commit to one main exam. Avoid splitting months across two complete preparation tracks. Define a switch point only if mock performance stalls after a fixed period.

Questions MBA and MiM applicants ask
Is the GRE accepted for MBA admissions?
Yes. ETS says more than 1,300 business schools worldwide welcome GRE scores for some or all MBA programs. Acceptance does not tell you how common GRE is at a particular school, so verify the live policy and class profile.3
Do top business schools prefer GMAT over GRE?
There is no universal preference. HBS explicitly says it has no preference toward a particular test. Choose the exam that produces the strongest credible section profile for the programs on your list.1
What does Harvard's 44% GRE figure mean?
It means 44% of the HBS Class of 2027 submitted a GRE score. Some students submitted multiple tests, so the GRE and GMAT percentages overlap and should not be subtracted from 100%.1
Is GRE a good choice for MiM admissions?
It can be. Leading programs such as London Business School accept GMAT or GRE. Because MiM programs seldom publish test-mix percentages, make the choice using your performance, the curriculum and each program's current rule.7
Does submitting GRE reduce scholarship chances?
No automatic GRE scholarship penalty appeared in the primary school policies reviewed for this article. Awards are program-specific and usually holistic; confirm current criteria directly with each school.
