Applying to universities in Dubai follows a broadly similar process to applications elsewhere, but with a few UAE-specific steps. Here's exactly what to do and when.
Start 12–18 months before your intended enrolment. Use university rankings, program accreditation lists from the UAE's Commission for Academic Accreditation (CAA), and alumni networks to create a shortlist of 5–8 universities. Consider program fit, campus culture, tuition, and career outcomes.
Select your field of study, degree level (Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD), and preferred specialisation. Verify that the program is accredited by CAA or an equivalent international body. Some programs  like medicine, engineering, and law  have additional licensing requirements in the UAE.
Determine which tests your target universities require: SAT (for international branch campuses), EmSAT (for UAE-focused universities), IELTS / TOEFL (English proficiency), or subject-specific tests. Begin test prep at least 6 months before deadlines. Anannt's SAT coaching and IELTS preparation classes in Dubai are designed for exactly this timeline.
Compile your academic transcripts (attested by school and/or MOEEW/KHDA for UAE residents), passport copies, Emirates ID (if applicable), test score reports, personal statement or statement of purpose, and 1–2 letters of recommendation from teachers or mentors. For international students, arrange notarised translations if documents are not in English or Arabic.
Most Dubai universities use an online application portal. Complete the application form carefully, upload all required documents, pay the application fee (typically AED 100–500), and submit before the deadline. Apply to multiple universities for safety  don't rely on a single application.
Competitive programs  particularly in medicine, engineering, architecture, and business at selective universities  often require an interview. Interviews may be in-person, online, or recorded. Research the program thoroughly and prepare for questions about your motivation, academic background, and career goals.
Universities typically issue conditional offers (pending final results) or unconditional offers. Compare all offers including scholarship amounts, campus facilities, and program structure. Accept your preferred offer by the stated deadline and pay any enrolment deposit. Decline other offers promptly  this frees up places for waitlisted students.
UAE residents can transfer their residency visa to a student visa through the university. International students must apply for a UAE Student Visa sponsored by their university  the process typically takes 2–6 weeks. Arrange accommodation early: most Dubai universities have limited on-campus housing; off-campus shared apartments near universities typically cost AED 2,500–5,000 per month.
Prepare these documents well in advance. Attestation of documents can take several weeks in the UAE.
Most Dubai universities have two primary intakes: September (Fall) and January (Spring). Early applicants have a higher chance of receiving scholarships and securing housing.
| University | September Intake | January Intake | Type |
|---|---|---|---|
| NYU Abu Dhabi | Jan 1 (Regular) / Nov 1 (Early) | Not available | Early Nov |
| American University of Sharjah | Mar 1 – Jul 31 | Oct – Dec | Rolling |
| Heriot-Watt University Dubai | Mar – Aug | Oct – Dec | Rolling |
| University of Birmingham Dubai | Jan – Jul | Limited | Rolling |
| Middlesex University Dubai | Feb – Aug | Oct – Dec | Rolling |
| BITS Pilani Dubai | Jan – Jun | Not available | Apply Early |
| SP Jain Global Management | Nov (Early) / Mar (Regular) | Sep – Oct | Early Nov |
| UOWD | Mar – Aug | Oct – Jan | Rolling |
| Curtin University Dubai | Mar – Aug | Oct – Jan | Rolling |
| Amity University Dubai | Feb – Aug | Oct – Dec | Rolling |
| Manipal GlobalNXT Dubai | Feb – Aug | Oct – Dec | Rolling |
Understanding the full cost of studying in Dubai is essential for planning. Costs vary enormously depending on the university type, program, and lifestyle.
Most Dubai universities offer merit-based scholarships. Here are the main types available:
Based on academic performance. Typically 25%, 50%, 75%, or 100% tuition waivers for students with strong GPAs or SAT/A-Level scores. Apply at the time of admission.
All admitted students receive a full scholarship covering tuition, housing, travel, and living expenses  one of the most generous undergraduate scholarships in the world.
The UAE government offers scholarships to UAE nationals for study at approved institutions. The MoHESR (Ministry of Higher Education) manages several national scholarship programs.
Large UAE employers  particularly in oil & gas, banking, and aviation  offer partial or full scholarships in exchange for a work commitment post-graduation. Enquire directly with companies in your chosen sector.
Your visa pathway depends on whether you're already a UAE resident or arriving from abroad. The process differs significantly between these two groups.
If you're already on a UAE residency visa (through family sponsorship), your university will typically transfer your visa status to a student visa under their sponsorship. This process is straightforward and takes 1–2 weeks. You won't need to leave the country.
Your university will sponsor your UAE Student Visa. After accepting an offer, submit required documents to the university's admissions office. The visa is processed through the GDRFA and typically takes 2–6 weeks. You'll need a medical fitness certificate and Emirates ID after arrival.
Outstanding graduates from UAE-accredited universities with a minimum GPA of 3.75 are eligible for a 10-year UAE Golden Visa. This grants long-term residency without employer sponsorship  an extraordinary post-graduation benefit for high achievers.
One of the most common questions from students in Dubai is whether to take the EmSAT (UAE's national standardised test) or the SAT (College Board's international exam). The answer depends entirely on where you want to apply.
| Feature | EmSAT | SAT |
|---|---|---|
| Administered by | UAE Ministry of Education (MOEEW) | College Board (USA) |
| Primary audience | UAE students & residents | International applicants globally |
| Subjects tested | Math, English, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Arabic | Evidence-Based Reading & Writing + Math |
| Score range | 500–2000 per subject | 400–1600 total |
| Accepted by UAE universities | All UAE private & federal universities | Selective private & international campuses |
| Accepted internationally | UAE only | Widely accepted globally |
| Test format | Computer-based, adaptive | Digital SAT (computer-based, adaptive) |
| Preparation time | 3–6 months recommended | 3–12 months recommended |
| Cost (approximate) | AED 200–300 | USD 60 (~AED 220) |
Take both if you can. If you're applying to UAE-focused private universities (Amity, Manipal, UOWD, University of Sharjah), EmSAT is sufficient. If you're targeting international branch campuses (AUS, Heriot-Watt, BITS Pilani, Birmingham), add the SAT to your preparation. If you have any ambition to apply internationally in the future, the SAT gives you global flexibility that EmSAT does not.

SAT score requirements vary significantly by university and program. NYU Abu Dhabi is highly selective and typically sees competitive applicants scoring 1350–1550. American University of Sharjah (AUS) typically requires 1100+. BITS Pilani Dubai looks for 1200+. University of Birmingham Dubai suggests around 1200+. Many Dubai universities, including Middlesex, UOWD, and Amity, do not require the SAT at all for certain programs.
Use our SAT Score Calculator to see where your current score stands, and our SAT Mini Diagnostic to identify exactly where to improve.
Yes  most UAE private and federal universities accept EmSAT as the primary admission test for UAE-based students. EmSAT Math scores of 900–1700 are required depending on the program and university (engineering programs typically require higher scores). EmSAT English is also used as an English proficiency measure at UAE-focused institutions.
However, international branch campuses such as NYU Abu Dhabi, University of Birmingham Dubai, and BITS Pilani Dubai typically do not accept EmSAT as a substitute for SAT/ACT. If you're targeting these institutions, prepare for the SAT. If you want maximum flexibility, preparing for both EmSAT and SAT is the strongest approach.
Dubai has universities across a wide range of price points. Tuition fees range from AED 28,000–30,000 per year at the most affordable institutions (Amity, Manipal GlobalNXT) to AED 65,000–100,000+ at premium UK/US branch campuses. NYU Abu Dhabi is unique in being fully funded for all admitted students.
Living costs are higher than in India but comparable to the UK or Australia: expect to spend AED 3,000–5,000 per month on accommodation, food, transport, and personal expenses. Many students manage this through merit scholarships (which can cover 25–100% of tuition), part-time internships, and family support.
International students on a standard UAE student visa are generally not permitted to work full-time outside of university. However, many universities facilitate:
The UAE has been reforming its employment regulations for students, and some free zone universities may have different rules. Check current regulations with GDRFA Dubai or your university's international office.
All universities operating in the UAE must be licensed by the UAE's Commission for Academic Accreditation (CAA), which is the national quality assurance body. Beyond this, many institutions hold additional international accreditations:
Always verify current accreditation status before enrolling, especially if you plan to use your degree for professional licensing in a specific country.
The UAE Golden Visa is a long-term residency permit (5–10 years, renewable) that allows holders to live, work, and study in the UAE without requiring a local sponsor. For graduates, the key criteria are:
This is a remarkable opportunity for high-achieving students. Studying hard for a strong GPA in Dubai doesn't just serve career goals  it could secure your long-term residency in one of the world's most dynamic cities.
The ideal timeline depends on your target September intake:
For competitive institutions like NYU Abu Dhabi or AUS, earlier is always better. Scholarship availability also decreases as places fill.
